Kacirek and Nash to represent North Olmsted at districts

District Gymnastics Preview

By Ryan Kaczmarski

It was no surprise when Magnificat’s gymnastics team finished near the top, in second place behind Medina High School, at the Medina sectional meet on Feb. 9, and qualified as a team to Saturday’s Painesville district meet. But to see multiple members of Westshore area public high school teams qualify to districts was an added bonus.

Magnificat not only qualified to districts as a team, the Blue Streaks also had Julia Corrao (10th all-around, 11th vault and fourth in the floor exercise at sectionals), Alysha Thompson (third in the vault at sectionals), Hayley Austria (third on the balance beam at sectionals) and Hannah Carpenter (fourth on the balance beam) qualify as individuals.

North Olmsted’s gymnastics team had a respectable seventh-place finish in the team competition, followed by Westlake in eighth place and Lakewood in 10th place.

North Olmsted has not had a full gymnastics team for several years, and to have two of the four girls competing for the Eagles as they move on to the district meet is a great accomplishment. The Eagles’ Quinn Kacirek , a state qualifier last season, placing third on the balance beam in the 2012 state tournament, earned her spot in the district tournament with a second-place finish in the all-around, fourth place in the vault, third place in the uneven parallel bars and first place in the floor exercise. Also representing North Olmsted will be Krissy Nash, who finished in fifth place in the all-around and fourth place on the bars at sectionals. Nash did not have the opportunity to move forward in the tournaments last season due to an ankle injury, but according to North Olmsted head coach Teresa Principi, she has come back strong this season.

Representing Westlake High School will be Brianna Sokol, who took sixth place in the vault at sectionals, while Grace Hinslea-Burke will represent Lakewood High School behind her fourth place all-around, second place in the vault and floor and fifth place on the bars performances at sectionals.
