The process has started to replace outgoing Councilman at Large Scott Pohlkamp on City Council.
As of early Dec. 17, Council Clerk Joan Kemper said she had received four applications for the position, which will become vacant Dec. 31 when Pohlkamp’s resignation to focus more attention on his new business takes effect. Kemper said all four applications had come in Monday morning and that she had not had a chance to discuss them yet with council President Paul Koomar.
Replacing Pohlkamp will not be easy, Koomar said.
“We will miss Scott and his leadership on council,” Koomar said. He has always brought a good perspective to city issues that we have faced in recent years. We wish him the best on his business venture.”
Koomar said there will be good candidates for the position.
“I’m confident that we will receive interest from residents who are community minded,” he said. “We look forward to talking with them.”
Koomar had announced at the Dec. 10 council committee sessions that council would be taking resumes from candidates through the end of December. Koomar said he had approached the four council ward representatives, Dave Tadych, Ward 1; Clete Miller, Ward 2; Karen Lieske, Ward 3; and Mike Young, Ward 4; none of whom had expressed any interest in filling the at-large seat. Pohlkamp was unopposed when he ran for the seat last year, after Jim Scott said he was not seeking re-election.
Koomar asked interested candidates to file resumes with Kemper at email@example.com.
Because it is a four-year seat, council will have to appoint a successor. Because there are more than two years remaining in Pohlkamp’s four-year term, the appointee would then have to decide whether to seek to seek re-election in 2013 to serve the remaining two years. Normally, the Bay Village election cycle keeps the two four-year at-large posts in separate elections, two years apart. Dwight Clark currently holds the other at-large post, which is up for its normal four-year cycle in 2013.
The city charter said council has 30 days from the formal date of his resignation to act on Pohlkamp’s resignation.
