Overdue congratulations go out to all of the local cross country runners who participated in the state cross country meets in Columbus on Nov. 3. In the Division I girls meet, Maddie Britton (Bay) placed 10th with her time of 18:13.64. Other local runners participating in the girls race were Madison Connelly (Rocky River, 18:58.32, 43rd), Abby Christel (Bay, 18:59.84, 47th), Olivia Bechtel (Bay, 19:49.72, 101st), Hailey Russell (Bay, 19:57.27, 113th), Maddie Voiers (Bay, 20:09.29, 123rd) and Alyse Arko (Bay, 20:25.36, 133rd). On the boys side, Rocky River’s Justin Reynolds placed 59th in the Division II race, with his time of 16:52.64.

Congratulations go out to the Fairview and Lutheran West high school volleyball players who received All-Patriot Athletic Conference team selections. Katie Gathman (F), Brenna Villwock (LW) and Amanda Stephens (LW) all received first team All-PAC nods; Marissa Rinehart (F), Laura Flanagan (LW) and Rachael Anderson (F) all received second team All-PAC honors; and Sammie Anderson (F) and Emily Barber (LW) were named Honorable Mention.

Pancake breakfast with Singing Santa

Grab the kids and join us for a pancake breakfast with Singing Santa, to benefit the Big Red Machine Travel Baseball Team. Showtime is 8:15 a.m., followed by pictures with Santa. Make your wish list to Santa, and participate in the raffle for great themed gift baskets. The 2012 Rocky River Hockey Classic Thanksgiving tournament will be hosted at Hamilton Ice arena, commencing Friday. First-round matchups for these high school teams include games between Hudson and Mentor (9:15 a.m.), Solon and Westlake (11:15 a.m.) and Rocky River and Olmsted Falls (5 p.m.). Qualifying rounds are also scheduled for Saturday morning and evening. The semifinals square off the four teams emerging from bracket play and are at 5:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Sunday. The Hamilton Ice Arena in Rocky River will have open skating sessions during the Thanksgiving weekend, starting with today’s “Pizza Skate” (free pizza with paid admission) from 1:30-4:30 p.m., and tonight’s open skate from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Other open skating sessions will be Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7:30-9:30 p.m., Saturday from 2-4 p.m. and Sunday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. For additional information, call 440-356-5656.

Magnificat High School will hold its youth basketball “CYO Day” Dec. 12. It will be an action-packed day for all CYO basketball players and coaches, including food, prizes and fun. The day will also feature three girls basketball games, with the Blue Streaks hosting Lorain High School. The freshman game starts at 4:30 p.m., the junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m. and the varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $1 per person. Be sure to wear your team’s jersey! Magnificat High School will hold its “Youth Gymnastics Day” Dec. 19. It will be an exciting day for youth and club gymnasts, including food, prizes and fun. The day will also include a varsity gymnastics meet, with the Blue Streaks hosting Avon Lake, Cuyahoga Heights, Medina, Olmsted Falls, Rocky River and Westlake high schools at 6 p.m. Admission is $1 per person.
