In the midst of non-stop rain, the Westlake Demons football team broke the long-standing curse of being unable to beat the Avon Lake Shoremen this weekend with a 28-21 victory.

Their first victory against Avon Lake since 1984 came about due to a 3-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Kent Axcell with 1:25 left in the game. It was Axcell’s fourth touchdown of the game (three rushing and one passing).

“It was such an awesome game,” Axcell said. “It’s crazy. It feels amazing to beat them. It’s the best thing in my life right now.”

After wide receiver/defensive back Shawn Turk went down with a knee injury in the first quarter the team stepped up in his absence.  A large chunk of the Demons offense was taken away when Turk went down according to Westlake head coach Mark Campo.

“He’s a weapon that we missed,” Campo said. “He’s our playmaker. But we had guys who stepped in, took his place, and did a good job.”

Westlake never fell behind by more than a touchdown after conceding the first score to Avon Lake. After trading touchdowns and missing an extra point, the Demons capitalized on an interception by linebacker Danny Strodtbeck, going ahead 21-14 midway through the third quarter.

“There’s no doubt this is the biggest win for this program,” Campo said. “We just beat a team that was number one in Division I in their region. I’d say that’s a pretty darn big win.”

The win puts the Demons at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Southwestern Conference play on the season. Their next opponent will be a Midpark team coming off of a big loss to North Olmsted.
