After a first-round bye, the Magnificat volleyball team defeated Parma 3-0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-11) Thursday night at Strongsville High School, for the Division I sectional crown.
While Parma may not have been a formidable opponent for the Blue Streaks, Magnificat head coach Mike Cannon was happy to get back on the floor and get his team some action after a week-and-a half layoff.
“We wanted to make sure everybody got a chance to touch the ball in a competitive situation, outside of our gym,” he said. “We’ve been beating each other up for about a week now.
“They did a good job,” he added. “We feel that (our roster is) deep. We just have to make sure that everybody’s ready for game situations.”
Magnificat’s record stands at 12-11, a bit below Cannon’s expectations for the season.
“It’s about four more losses than we’re used to having in a season,” he said. “We play, we feel, one of the toughest schedules in Northeast Ohio. This year, we played seven of the top-10 teams in the state. There’s a lot of parity in Northeast Ohio right now. Everybody’s beating everybody up.
“We tried not to focus on that too much.”
Magnificat is trying to keep its streak of 20-plus years in a row of taking the district championship. The Blue Streaks played Strongsville last night in the district semifinals. The winner of the match will play for the Division I district title tomorrow night at Strongsville High School at 7:15 p.m.
AROUND THE WESTSHORE:
NORTH OLMSTED fell to Brunswick 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) in a hard-fought sectional final match last Thursday at Midview High School.
Despite trailing by as much as double digits in each set, the Eagles never gave up and battled to the end.
“All year we’ve been battling back, it seems,” North Olmsted head coach Jason Krucek said. “We tried to pull something out, but it just wasn’t enough. The first game we were down by 10, but we only lost by four.
“It’s just tough to come back from that big of a hole.”
