Interim North Olmsted curriculum director has strong Westshore background

By Jeff Gallatin

NORTH OLMSTED – North Olmsted school officials Wednesday opted for a candidate familiar with the Westshore in filling the interim director of curriculum,  instruction and technology post.

Larry Orrach, who worked 14 years in a similar post for the Bay Village School District from 1997 to 2011, was approved as the interim director at the Aug. 15 school board meeting. Last year, he was coordinator of grants and federal programs for the Lakewood City Schools. Orrach will be filling the No. 2 administrative post in the North Olmsted school district, which was left open when Associate Superintendent Anne Pyros took a job as human resources director for the neighboring Westlake City Schools.

Instead of  seeking another associate superintendent, North Olmsted Interim Superintendent Terry Krivak chose to advertise for an interim director, saying it would give whoever becomes the permanent superintendent and the school board the flexibility to find the right person for the position of associate superintendent, who would be working closely with the new superintendent. Krivak, who is expected to be interim superintendent for about a year while the district conducts a nationwide search to replace Cheryl Dubsky, who retired at the end of July, said the district should have a better idea of what it would want in the associate position after a new permanent superintendent is hired.

Referring to Orrach, Krivak praised his capabilities.

“He has a top background for curriculum work,” he said. “He held the same position for 14 years in Bay Village on a permanent basis.”

Krivak said Orrach being familiar with education in western suburban schools also was a plus. The district advertised the new post at the beginning of August. Krivak said it will aid the district because it was able to get a qualified person in the position quickly.

Orrach said he’s pleased to get the job in North Olmsted.

“The good work done in this district for many years is well-known around the area,” he said. “We collaborated with the district on different programs in the area, and I worked with Anne Pyros on related educational issues. She’s a very talented person who put a lot into the work.”

Orrach praised North Olmsted’s educational programs and planned to continue work on advancing district educational programs with the rest of the educational staff. School board members said they were pleased to get an educator with Orrach’s experience and expertise. Orrach’s annual salary is $92,435.
