Magnificat’s Varsity-A tennis team was the victor against both of their neighbors last week in regular season matches. On Monday, they just missed sweeping Rocky River as they had a decisive 4-1 win against the Pirates. The sole win for River came at first singles, where Isa Quinones bounced Tess Moran of the Blue Streaks. The real test for Magnificat came later in the week, when they crossed paths with Westlake. At the Demons home courts, Magnificat had a thrilling 4-1 victory that ended all doubts of whether the Blue Streaks were going to be a top contender in the State once again. Emily Witt battled state ranked Westlake’s Lauren Golick at first singles where Golick pulled out the lone Demons win. The second- and third-singles matches were won by Blue Streaks Lauren O’Malley and Tess Moran, respectively. The real excitement came at doubles, where both matches went into a nail biting third set. Even though the Streaks lost both first sets in each doubles match, the partners of Sarah Patrick and Veronica Johnson as well as Katie McCabe and Miranda Manimbo displayed their mental toughness as they roared back to win the second and third sets to secure another team win. Mags wrapped up the week with a fantastic finish at the Cardinal Doubles Classic held in Canfield. The team finished second overall as they encountered some of the best doubles matches in the state with teams from Upper Arlington, Hathaway Brown, and Canfield.
