For the third year in a row, the Rocky River boys lacrosse team made it to the regional finals. To do so, it had to get past the “friendly rival” of Bay High School.
Bay held on tight, only giving up two goals in the first quarter, but the Rockets were overmatched by the Pirates, who eventually won handily by the score of 14-4.
Rocky River had goals by Eric Sperli (4), Andreas Tjotjos (1, 2 assists), Michael Henry (1, 1 assist), Ty Daugstrup (2), Bobby Perez (2, 1 assist) and Matt Mehrige (4). Bay had goals by Steve Burns (2) and Mitch Voll (2, 1 assist). Reid Wilson pitched in with an assist for the Rockets. The Pirates outshot the Rockets by a margin of 40-22. Both Bay’s P.J. Nye and Rocky River’s Aaron Blossey tallied 11 saves in goal.
For Rocky River, the victory brought its record to 13-3 and gave it the chance to return to the final four by hosting last Friday night’s regional finals game against Toledo’s St. Francis DeSales. The winner of the regional finals game will play tonight in the state semifinals against the winner of the game between Hawken and University schools (see the brackets at http://www.ohsla.org/Docs/rev%205-24%20Tournament%202012.pdf). If the Pirates are still playing, they will host the state semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Bay finished the season with a record of 9-7.
