TECH PROGRAM TOPS: The engineering and technology education program at Westlake High School was recently selected for the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association program excellence award. This distinction recognizes the program as tops in Ohio and among the elite in the nation.
Adam Purdy and Scott Kutz are teachers in the department. Purdy said it’s important that students learn about technology so citizens can make smart decisions and pursue careers related to technology, engineering and design.
Sponsored by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, the award is among the highest honors given to technology and engineering teachers.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS NOMINATED: Bassett and Hilliard elementary schools are two of only 14 Ohio schools nominated by the state’s Department of Education for the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools award. The Blue Ribbon Schools program is part of a larger U.S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate information about top teaching practices.
Bassett and Hilliard were nominated because of their students’ performance on state assessment tests.
“The staff at Bassett is humbled by this recognition,” Bassett Principal Ben Hodge said in a statement.
Hilliard Principal Kim Conley also said her staff was honored by the nomination.
“Through the solid foundation which former Principal Mary Flanagan established, I’ve been privileged to carry on this journey with a remarkable and dedicated staff, talented students, and supportive parents and community,” Conley said.
