Westlake’s Katie Carroll makes verbal commitment to Quinnipiac University

By Ryan Kaczmarski

Katie Carroll, a six-foot standout forward for the Westlake Demons girls basketball team, has made a verbal commitment to attend Quinnipiac University in the fall.

Quinnipiac started the recruiting process during Carroll’s sophomore year.

“I went down for a visit last year,” Carroll said. “I really love the campus, so this year when they offered me (a scholarship) I thought it was the right choice.”

Carroll, who averaged 10.2 points per game last season, has 381 rebounds for her career (7.1 rebounds per game last season). She shot 71 percent from the free throw line, 53 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from three-point range in 2010-2011. She has played in 72 games in three seasons for Westlake.

During the summer, she played AAU basketball for TNBA West.

“Mr. Mac (TNBA coach Kevin McNamara) is a great coach,” Carroll said. “Without him, I wouldn’t have had the exposure (to colleges) that I had.”

“Katie is six feet tall and a deadly shooter,” McNamara said. “The colleges have been salivating over her because of the versatility in her game. She’s not only a shooter, she can defend, rebound and put the ball on the floor.”

Carroll had considered attending Penn, Colgate and Brown universities, but they did not offer her a scholarship.

Quinnipiac University is a private, coeducational university with 5,900 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students. Last season the Bobcats finished 14-16, 11-7 in the Northeast Conference, which is made up of Bryant, Central Connecticut State, Farleigh Dickinson, Long Island University Monmouth, Mount St. Mary’s, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (N.Y.), St. Francis (Pa.) and Wagner.

“I think I’m going to have a great impact on their team,” Carroll said. “I think I’m going to be a great fit and I’m really excited.”
