A 73-year-old man lost control of his maroon Ford Taurus and crashed it into Dick’s Sporting Goods store at Crocker Park in Westlake Thursday afternoon.
The car traveled at least 25 feet into the front of the store before coming to rest.
The man was transported to a St. John Medical Center for an evaluation, Westlake Assistant Fire Chief Jim Hughes said.
No employees or bystanders were injured, police said.
No charges have been filed against the driver, James Buchanan, of Westlake. But Westlake Police will ask the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles to re-examine his fitness to drive.
Police said their preliminary findings are that Buchanan was driving westbound on Crocker Park Boulevard when he lost control of his car, jumped the sidewalk and hit a large planter in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods. Buchanan reversed, then accelerated forward and crashed through the front of the store, ending up approximately 25 feet inside.
Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor, police said. Buchanan was wearing his safety belt.
A woman at the scene, who said she was the driver’s caretaker and was with him shortly before the accident, told West Life that the accident was not medically related.
The store has since reopened.
