Varsity Football- Week 5 recap

Homecoming heartache for some, new streaks for others

By Ryan Kaczmarski

The high school homecoming season has started off with heartbreaking losses for Rocky River and Westlake, while Bay, North Olmsted and Lutheran West start on turning their seasons around.

Rocky River started the evening on an ominous note in the homecoming game against #25 Midview. The Pirates (3-2, 1-1 in the West Shore Conference) were penalized before the game even started because the heavy rainfall delayed the pregame homecoming court parade and ceremony, eventually falling by the score of 34-14.

The Middies (4-1, 2-0 in the WSC) went up 14-0 early on a 4-yard run by quarterback Cody Calloway and a 37-yard pass from Calloway to wide receiver Eric Lauer (both PAT by Silvester Messiah).

The Pirates would get on the board in the second quarter on a 16-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Alex Theiling to junior wide receiver Matt Kadlec to make it 14-7 at the half.

The third quarter was back-and-forth with Midview scoring on a 17-yard run by Jacob Bennett (PAT good), River scoring on a 13-yard pass from Theiling to junior Austin Kelly and the Middies getting it right back with a 39-yard scoring pass from Calloway to Jeff Ondo to go up 28-14 (all PAT good).

Midview added another touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard Bennett run (PAT failed) to make the final score 34-14.

Midview totaled 464 yards on offense to Rocky River’s 228. The Pirates will play Friday night at home against Avon at 7 p.m.

North Olmsted went into Westlake on Friday night and surprised the Demons 21-14 in overtime on Westlake’s homecoming night.

The Eagles (2-3, 1-1 in the Southwestern Conference) started the scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run by senior Shamir Tomlinson (PAT by Thomas Rodriguez). Westlake (3-2, 1-1 in the SWC) answered back on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Jonathan Brick (PAT failed) to make the score 7-6 in favor of North Olmsted.

In the second quarter Eagles’ junior defensive back Michael Starcovic intercepted an errant Phil Brusk pass for a 33-yard touchdown (PAT good). Demons’ quarterback Brusk would get the points back on a 72-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Kyle Perkins. Brusk ran in the 2-point conversion to tie the game at the half.

There was no scoring in the second half, sending the game into overtime where North Olmsted won on a 20-yard run by sophomore quarterback Brad Novak.

Westlake plays at Olmsted Falls (3-2, 2-0 in the SWC) on Friday night at 7 p.m. North Olmsted plays at home on Friday night against Brecksville-Broadview Heights at 7 p.m.

Bay was the lone homecoming winner in the Westshore area on Friday night as they beat Vermilion 24-14.

The Rockets (2-3, 1-0 in WSC) had scores in the first half on two touchdown runs by junior Andy Barbour (6 and 5 yards) and a 31-yard field goal by junior Jack Creech. They added a late touchdown on a 36-yard pass from junior Chris Brajdic to senior Evan Campbell (all PAT by Creech).

Bay plays Friday night at Midview at 7 p.m.

Lutheran West earned their first victory of the season Friday night by blanking Brookside 28-0.

The Longhorns (1-4, 1-1 in the Patriot Athletic Conference) scored on four touchdown runs. The first came on a 2-yard run by junior Dan Hillenbrand, the second on a 24-yard run by senior Larry Oldenburg and the final two by junior Ryan Mordaunt (12 and 28 yards).

Lutheran West has homecoming Friday night against Brooklyn at 7 p.m.

Fairview fell to Black River to stay winless, 34-14.

The Warriors (0-5) had scores on two touchdown throws by senior David Lansu, the first (15 yards) to sophomore Jason Kish and the second (13 yards) to junior Corey Schmidt.

Fairview will try to get their first victory on Friday night at Clearview at 7 p.m.
