The Bay girls track team left Ravenna last Saturday with 53 points and the lead in the Division II regional track meet. An official’s error in the 3200, however, voided the results and forced a rerun Tuesday afternoon.
Mantua Crestwood’s Sammi Vaughan won the race to give her team another 10 points. But Rocket junior Hanna Sterle came in sixth to eliminate any doubt, giving Bay three more points and its first-ever regional track and field championship.
Sterle, the Midview district champion, ran a 12:23.40. Amy Dalpiaz claimed the fourth and final state qualifying spot with a time of 12:12.34. Crestview’s chance to overtake the Rockets went by the wayside when its second runner, Abby Soltisz, came in ninth with a 12:27.79.
In the final standings, Bay won with 56 points, followed by Crestwood at 52 and Canton South at 45. Bridget Doughty’s record-setting wins in the 100 and 300 hurdles gave the Rockets two event championships.
The boys also won their first-ever regional crown, scoring 52 points to get past Orange (48.10) and Cortland Lakeview (46). The Rockets won four event championships in the process, including a pair of wins from Michael Brajdic in the 1600 and 3200.
