Gallagher appointed new police chief

The North Olmsted Civil Service Commission appointed Cpt. Jamie Gallagher as the new police chief of North Olmsted at its meeting on April 27.

According to North Olmsted Human Resources Director Cheryl Farver, the meeting was brief and Gallagher was selected from the list of four eligible candidates.

“The commission simply shared the results of the assessment with all of the attendants and made a motion to certify the list,” she said. “The mayor and the administration feel strongly that Mr. Gallagher will be an excellent chief.”

Mayor Kevin Kennedy had words of praise not only for Gallagher, but also for Mike Kilbane, Ron Cox and Burt Flynn, the three other candidates who were up for the position.

“I think Capt. Gallagher is going to be a great chief,” he said. “We had four really qualified candidates and being the top of those candidates really means something.”

Kennedy said he knows Gallagher will be up for the task of providing quality leadership for the North Olmsted Police Department.

“I’m looking forward to working with new chief Gallagher to make sure the city is safe and secure,” he said.

Current Chief Wayne Wozniak also expressed his gratitude to the department and the four candidates who were up for the chief position.

“We were real fortunate we had four really qualified and excellent candidates that tested for the position,” he said.

Wozniak, who will retire on May 6, said he is very confident in Gallagher’s skills.

“Capt. Gallagher coming out as number one was exceptional,” he said. “I think he’ll be really good for the city and for the police department.”

Wozniak said he has worked with Gallagher for at least 25 years, and he is certainly not lacking in the credentials to take the helm as the new chief.

“He’s really a first class individual and he’ll do an excellent job as the next police chief,” he said.

The swearing-in is 10 a.m. Monday at City Hall.
