FITNESS FUN FAIR: Rocky River High School freshmen and sophomores found fitness to be fun at a recent Fitness Fair held at the school.

“The whole idea of freshmen wellness has been a big theme this year,” explained Julie Achlidas, the high school fitness teacher and track coach who planned the fair. Once she realized the number of local fitness experts eager to be involved, Achlidas opened the event to sophomores as well.

The students shot hoops with former OSU basketball player Jamie Skelton, stretched their way through a band workout with Eric Burgess, hula-hooped with soccer coach Pat Gillespie, and did soccer and tennis drills with G.R. Rogenfels.

Also on hand were Ann Weixel of Ride + Workout in Lakewood, yoga instructor Susan Lowe, and Cindy McDonough, who demonstrated core and balance exercises. Registered nurses Barb Reddy and Ellen Bishop helped students evaluate their BMIs.

MIDDLE SCHOOLERS “LASSO A GOOD BOOK”: The Rocky River Middle School Library was transformed into the Double G Ranch (for library assistants Eileen Griffin and Joelle Gerlack) last week as students celebrated Right to Read Week.

Principal Sam Gifford drew three names, one from each grade, determining the winners of three NOOK e-readers.  Taking home the prizes were Victoria Zelinski, Laura Bodea and Hayden Kind.

To qualify for the drawing, students needed to read for one to two mods (23 minute periods) to receive a ticket for the drawing.

LEARN, DREAM, RUN: Registration is now open for the Girls on the Run program to be held at Kensington Intermediate School. Co-sponsored by the recreation department, the 10-week program is for girls in third. fourth and fifth grades. The focus is on self-esteem and fitness, and prepares students to participate in a 5K-run/walk event on May 22.  Cost for the workshop is on a sliding scale based on income.
