Week 7 is in the books…

By Jim Horvath

It was a tough night for the Westlake offense.

Visiting Olmsted Falls put the clamps on tailback Jonathan Brick, holding him to 22 yards as the Bulldogs went home with a 10-0 Southwestern Conference win.

Behind the arm of quarterback Brennan Laird and the legs of Jeremy Ortiz, the Bulldogs scored just enough to make their defense’s shutout performance pay off. Zach Ferster’s field goal in the first half was the only scoring of the game until Laird hit Ferster on a TD pass with 11:13 left in the game.

Ortiz helped the Bulldog effort with an unofficial 92 yards on 24 carries.

With the win, Falls raised it’s record to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the SWC, one game behind front-running Amherst and Avon Lake. The ‘Dogs also gained valuable computer points, since the Demons went into the gem fourth in their region.

Westlake lost just it’s second game of the season and fell to even in the SWC at 2-2.

Also in the SWC, North Olmsted almost pulled off the upset on the night at Brecksville, holding a 16-13 halftime lead before falling to the Bees, 25-22. Brecksville and Olmsted Falls are tied for second with three games left.

As expected, Amherst drilled Midpark 47-20, while Avon Lake came away with a 49-0 wipeout of Berea.

In the West Shore Conference, Fairview moved to 3-1 in it’s final season in the league with its 16-7 win at Midview. The Warriors led 9-7 at halftime and shutout the Middies to win their third game in a row. They’ll host Bay next Friday night.

In other games of note, state-ranked Avon pummeled Firelands, 59-14. The undefeated Eagles led 21-0 after the first quarter and 45-0 by halftime. And future WSC member Elyria Catholic dropped it first game of the fall, losing to Padua 41-23.

In the Patriot Athletic Conference, Luthern West’s game score at Keystone was unavailable.
