Week 6 is in the books…

By Jim Horvath

A number of Westshore football teams got some much-needed wins this Friday night as Week 6 of the 2010 season finished up.

In the Southwestern Conference, Olmsted Falls got a big win with it’s 24-14 win over Brecksville. The Bulldogs, trailing 14-10 at halftime, pitched a 14-0 shutout in the second half to knock the Bees out of a first-place tie in the SWC.

As expected, both of the other top teams – Amherst and Avon Lake – won their games handily. The unbeaten Comets remained so after a 42-13 drubbing of Berea at George Finnie Stadium on the B-W campus. The Shoremen kept pace, doing a number on Midpark, 42-7, before the hometown folks.

Going into next week, it’s Amherst and Avon Lake at 3-0 each, with Westlake and Brecksville right behind at 2-1.

In the Patriot Athletic Conference, Lutheran West got it’s second win of the season with a solid second-half performance in the Longhorns’ 23-13 win at Brooklyn.

Avon remained in first place in the West Shore Conference with a 42-19 smack down of Vermilion. Bay, which went into the game tied for the league lead, lost quarterback Ryan Hoke to an injury and proceeded to lose at North Ridgeville, 38-13.

Both Fairview and Rocky River got their second wins in a row to move to 2-1 in the WSC. The Warriors dominated from the start at home against Firelands, taking a 21-0 lead into the locker room at halftime and a 34-0 lead into the fourth quarter in a 34-13 win over the Falcons.

The Pirates found themselves in a shootout with visiting Midview, but managed to come away with a 44-30 win over the Middies on homecoming night. A 20-0 start helped River gain the early edge, as well as remain in the WSC hunt.
