Viva la Fusion!

Today’s Take: Fusion players earn All-America honors

By Jim Horvath

It has been awhile since I’ve talked about the Cleveland Fusion, the city’s entry into the Women’s Football Alliance.

It was a solid season for the Fusion, which fell to the St. Louis Slam, 50-23, in the first round of the playoffs back in June. Early in the fourth quarter, it was still anybody’s game as the Slam held a 35-23 lead. A 14-0 run to close out the game, however, ended any hopes of a Fusion comeback.

Still, the team was rewarded with a number of players getting named WFA All-Americans.

First team members making it included Fairview Park’s Lauren Kemp, who turned in a solid season at cornerback but missed the playoff game due to an injury. Joining Kemp on the first team was quarterback Pooh Garrison, tailback Martina Latessa, tight end Lisa Heinl, offensive tackle Nikicha Wilson and defensive tackle Shanolen Kendall.

The Fusion also had three young ladies make second team All-American as wide receiver Mandy Milhoan, linebacker Leann Bauer and free safety Tiffany Soggs made the roster.

Not only did these players earn postseason honors, they were invited to participate in the WFA’s All-American Game this Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas. That game will be played at 4 p.m. prior to the league’s championship game at 7 p.m. pitting the 12-0 Columbus Comets against the 11-0 Lone Star Mustangs out of Bedford, TX.

If you happen to be in Vegas this weekend and want to take in the games, they will be played at Faith Lutheran High School, 2015 South Hualapai Way.

Congratulations to the Fusion for a fine season, and kudos to the team’s All-American selections.
