Fusion provides a big hit

A Sporting Viewpoint: Fusion hits “The Really Big Show”

 By Jim Horvath

Throughout the Greater Cleveland area, sports fans are beginning to get familiar with the city’s women’s professional football team, the Cleveland Fusion.

This morning, WKNR sports talker Aaron Goldhammer got really familiar, up close and personal.

Fairview Park resident and fusion wide receiver/cornerback Lauren Kemp and teammate Martina Latessa made an appearance on “The Really Big Show,” hosted by veteran sportscaster Tony Rizzo and the ever-obnoxious, Denver native, Buckeye Football bashing Goldhammer. The gals were promoting not only their team, but also their upcoming rematch with Western Michigan this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Byers Field.

Western gave the Fusion their only loss of the season a few weeks ago in that state up north. The team is 6-1 heading into that grudge match and is probably a lock to make the playoffs in the Women’s Football Alliance. One of those wins was a convincing 60-3 thrashing of Pittsburgh back in April.

Wow, a 60-3 win over Pittsburgh. I love this team already!

And after today, I’m a fan – a big fan – of Latessa.

The Fusion running back took the challenge of taking on the football-clutching Goldhammer in the WKNR hallways after the interview. Latessa drilled him – laid him out – right there in front of the entire ‘KNR crew.

          You go, Martina!

To take a look for yourself, got to

and click on “The Really Big Show.” To see the entire team do that to Western Michigan this Saturday at Byers Field, go to and get some tickets. They’re only $10 for adults and $5 for students (with ID) and senior citizens (62 and up). Kids under 7 years of age are free.

Photographer Larry Bennet and I will be checking the team out tomorrow (that’s Thursday) during their final practice before the big game with Western. I’ll be talking one-on-one with Kemp and other members of the team in preparation for a feature article for West Life. Look for that to appear in print sometime this month.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
